55 illegal immigrants remanded by court

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded 55 foreign nationals into prison custody after their arrest at Kuntunse near Amasaman for allegedly entering Ghana through unapproved routes and residing without valid permits.
The group, part of a larger contingent of over 100 immigrants, was picked up by police on October 7, 2025, following intelligence-led operations.
Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Haligah told the court that officers found the accused in a compound house at Kuntunse-Satellite, a suburb of Accra.
Upon interrogation, the group reportedly refused to disclose their true identities and were subsequently transferred to the CID headquarters for screening.
Investigations revealed that the accused, believed to have come from neighbouring francophone countries, entered Ghana illegally between February and September 2025 and failed to register with immigration authorities or provide any valid travel or work documents.
ASP Haligah requested that the accused be remanded to allow for further investigations, citing the scale and complexity of the case.
The court granted the request and ordered that all 55 accused persons be held in custody pending the next hearing.
They have been charged with illegal entry and unlawful stay under Ghana’s Immigration Act, offences that carry penalties including imprisonment, fines, and deportation.
The accused include Igobere Mata, Victoir Abubakar, De Paul Smith Ekollo, Oumar Sylla, Martine Ndmebe, Oscar Oman Kamoki, Carlos Ngande, Kone Issa, Albert Binyame, Youssoupha Fatar, Alliun Fouko, Jean Traore Alomo, Manga Gilbert, and Atangana Jean Issa, among others.
The arrests form part of a wider crackdown on irregular migration and cross-border crime in the Greater Accra Region. Security agencies have expressed growing concern about unregulated foreign settlements, which they say could pose national security risks.
Authorities have vowed to intensify border surveillance and work with the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to ensure that all undocumented migrants are screened and repatriated where necessary.
