Managing Partner at Ntrakwah and CO, Abena Ntrakwah Mensah has enlightened law students on the wide range of opportunities available to them after the completion of their degrees.

According to her, even though few Law students are aware as to what use they want to put their degrees, a whole lot is missing at sea as to the possibilities outside of the walls of their schools.

Speaking at the 2022 FALAS CONFERENCE at the University of Ghana Faculty of Law, she outlined five (5) categories of law students and the extent to which they want to put their degrees and charged the students to follow whatever category they belong to in the best of their abilities.

To start with, she mentioned the first category as being those who want to pursue the academic path thus immediately after the LLb, they wish to continue their education in the varied postgraduate courses to begin a career in academia.

The second group of people is those who dream and find money everywhere. They have entrepreneurial skills and aim to identify opportunities to make money. So these groups are pursuing LLB not because they want to practice law but because they hope to appreciate business issues better and be better guided in their business issues.

The third group is those with LLb, who take up employment immediately after graduation. There are potential areas for holders of Llb and Management is one option, Human Resource, Administration, Procurement, Company Secretarial practice, Marketing, Journalism among others.

For those who belong to this category, the Legal practitioner suggested the need for them to enroll in some short courses to specialize in the area they intend to work in.

The fourth group is those who opt to go to other jurisdictions after their LLbs, qualify as a solicitor or barrister, and return to Ghana to undertake a post-call  Law course to be enrolled as lawyers in Ghana.

However, Madam Ntrakwah cautioned the above group to ensure that the other jurisdiction that they study law in, has similar systems to Ghana.

The final group, which encompasses most law students, is made up of those who want to enter the Ghana School of Law and qualify as lawyers.

She added that after being called to the Bar, there is a mandatory pupillage for six months after which the practicing license will be issued entitling one to practice as a lawyer in Ghana.

Moreover, she noted that where a lawyer begins his/her practice has a great impact on his/her legal practice thus advising them to associate with Firms where they will have the opportunity to learn.
