499 aggrieved Law Students have petitioned the Office of the President.

The petition, which was signed by Mr.Samson Adjei, one of the aggrieved students, reiterates the fact that they have obtained the Fifty percent (50%) minimum pass mark in the 2021 Ghana School of Law Entrance exams thus requesting admission.

Meanwhile, the office of the President has acknowledged receipt of the said petition.

A letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, and addressed to Mr.Sampson Adjei noted that the petition has been received and its content is being reviewed by the office.

“With reference to your petition dated 11th October 2021 in respect of the above subject matter, I write to acknowledge receipt and to inform you that the contents of your petition are being reviewed by this office,” it said.

Two thousand and thirty-four(2,034) LLB Candidates failed this year’s Ghana School of Law(GSL) entrance Examination.

Only 790 applicants representing 28% out of the total 2,824 who sat for the exams, passed.

On 5th October 2021, the National Association of Law students(NALS) lamented the ‘inexcusable’ exclusion of some 499 candidates in the 2021 admission list of the Ghana School of Law despite their attainment of the IEC’s agreed 50% pass mark in a statement.

According to the Association, the published 2021 success rate would have been even poorer, not because students underperformed, but because the original intention was to admit only 550 students.

“NAS regrets ascertaining thereto that, contrary to the earlier results, some 1289 out of the 2824 candidates representing 45.6% obtained 50% aggregated score hitherto set as a pass mark. Yet, there was a clear very inexcusable exclusion of some 499 candidates, constituting 39% of candidates who obtained this 50% and 18% of all the candidates,” it said.

“NALS is deeply saddened and notes that the published 2021 success rate would have been even poorer, not because students underperformed, but because the original intention was to admit only 550 students predetermined irrespective of the actual performance, as captured at paragraph 1055 at page 186 of the 2021 budget statement presented to Parliament by the Ministry of Finance,” it added.

Furthermore, the President of the Students’ Representative Council(SRC) of the Ghana School of Law, Wonder Kutor at a press conference on October 7, 2021, called on the General Legal Council(GLC) to admit the 499 additional candidates who qualified into the Ghana School of Law but were denied admission.

According to the SRC, these 499 students duly had 50% and above in the entrance exams. Thus entitled to admission.

“It is against this background that we respectfully call on the General Legal Council to reconsider its decision which we deem as unfair to consider the 499 candidates as eligible into the Ghana School of Law, “he said.

“The SRC is co-operating with management and they are also cooperating with us. We have no reason to doubt them that they will admit the 499 candidates,” he added.

The office of the President has meanwhile assured the aggrieved students that it will contact them shortly on their petition.
