48-year-old potter remanded over stealing, destroying metal guardrails

A 48-year-old head porter has been convicted for dismantling and stealing parts of the guardrail structure along the Obetsebi Lamptey overpass in Kaneshie, Accra.
The man, identified as Yaw Asare, was charged with stealing and willfully damaging public property—specifically six metal railings under the care of the Ghana Highways Authority. He pleaded guilty but offered an explanation that the Dansoman Circuit Court found contradictory to his admission. As a result, the presiding judge, Mrs. El-Alawa Abdul-Bassiit, entered a conviction based on his plea and remanded him into custody. Sentencing has been scheduled for June 23.
According to the prosecution, a resident of Sukura named Adam Alhassan lodged the complaint. Investigations revealed that Asare, who resides around Kwame Nkrumah Circle, had targeted the overpass railing a few months after the flyover’s construction.
On the night of June 9, around 11:30 p.m., Asare was caught in the act by locals and subjected to mob justice. A patrol team intervened and saved him from further harm. Upon inspection, six detached rail segments were found at the scene, along with a shifting spinner tool used for the theft.
He confessed during police interrogation that he intended to sell the stolen metal parts as scrap. Authorities are still working to determine the exact value of the damaged infrastructure.
