41st Martyrs Day: GBA condemns ‘irresponsible’ attack on former CJ
The MP is said to have described the reign of the former CJ as epitomizing the miscarriage of justice which he claims will continually rest on him even in his retirement.
The 41st Martyrs Day Service was held today at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra.
The Service saw in attendance, high-powered dignitaries. The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, the Attorney General, the Executive Secretary of the Presidency, The Chief Justice, and Justices of the Superior and Lower Courts were Prominent at the function.
Taking his turn to deliver his speech on ‘Lest we forget’ president of the Ghana Bar Association, Yaw Acheampong Boafo condemned statements made by a Minority Member of Parliament, Kwame Agbodza about the outgone Chief Justice.
The MP is said to have described the reign of the former CJ as epitomizing the miscarriage of justice which he claims will continually rest on him even in his retirement.
But to the Bar President, the above is ‘unfortunate and grossly irresponsible’ especially since the MP failed to pinpoint particulars of specific cases or the scientific test he carried out to come to this conclusion.
Mr. Boafo thus urged all to be’ circumspect both in our actions and statements to ensure that no judge in this country should ever suffer the tragedy and fate of the martyrs we celebrate.”
Furthermore, the GBA president also condemned statements, pronouncements, and commentaries that tend to intimidate, threaten and attack the persons of our judges over their judgments and rulings by persons who feel aggrieved or unsatisfied.
June 30 is marked on the legal calendar as the Martyrs Day which is used in remembrance of three High Court Justices; Justices Fred Poku Sarkodee, Ceceilaia Koranten-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong, who were abducted and gruesomely murdered.
