A 25-year-old mechanic has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Asante Akropong Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District for robbing a university student at Abrafo Kokobeng near Akropong.
The convict, Eric Boampong, admitted to the charge of robbery and was sentenced by Mrs. Gloria Mensah Bonsu, the presiding judge, after pleading guilty.
Prosecuting the case, Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu explained that the victim, Roudy Aboagye Agyemang, is a level 400 student at the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) and resides in Abrafo Kokobeng. Boampong, the prosecutor noted, lives in Atwima Koforidua.
The incident occurred on January 10 of this year around 2:00 a.m., when the convict broke into the victim’s room while she was asleep. Upon waking, the victim saw Boampong attempting to steal her iPhone 7, valued at GH¢1,200.
When she tried to resist, Boampong, armed with two pairs of scissors, a plier, a spanner, and a magnetic tool, threatened to harm her. Fearing for her safety, the victim handed over her phone and ran outside, shouting for help.
Neighbors responded to her cries and apprehended the convict before handing him over to the Akropong Police. During interrogation, Boampong confessed to the crime. After investigations were completed, he was charged and brought before the court.
