Accra, Ghana — The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, led by its Chairperson and Returning Officer, Jean Mensa, has declared John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the president-elect following the December 7, 2024, general elections. This announcement was made in accordance with Article 63 of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the EC to oversee and declare results of presidential elections.

John Mahama garnered 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of valid votes cast, defeating the incumbent Vice President and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%. The vote difference between the two candidates stands at 1,671,093.

The EC clarified that the results announced were based on figures from 267 constituencies, with nine constituencies yet to report due to logistical issues. However, Chairperson Jean Mensa explained that the outstanding votes, totaling slightly over 947,000, would not alter the outcome, as Mahama’s lead remains unassailable.

While declaring Mahama as the president-elect, Jean Mensa emphasized the Commission's commitment to transparency and due process. She assured Ghanaians that the results from the remaining nine constituencies would be collated and incorporated into the official records to complete the electoral process.

The declaration aligns with Article 63 of the 1992 Constitution, which requires a candidate to secure more than 50% of valid votes cast to be elected president. This constitutional threshold ensures that the winning candidate has the mandate of the majority of voters.

John Dramani Mahama’s victory marks a return to the presidency, affirming his enduring influence in Ghanaian politics and the trust reposed in him by the electorate. As the nation prepares for his leadership, the focus shifts to fostering unity and addressing the pressing needs of Ghanaians.
