Unidentified gunmen have reportedly killed two individuals in separate incidents in Bawku, a town that has been grappling with heightened tensions and escalating violence in recent months.

The first incident involved Moro Aziz, a mentally challenged resident of Gozesi, a suburb of Bawku. Aziz is said to have wandered near the Bawku cemetery, where he was tragically killed. Details surrounding his death remain unclear.

The second fatality occurred in Daduri, another Bawku suburb, where Kasim, the victim, was targeted and killed while attempting to relocate to another area. Eyewitnesses suggest that he was attacked during his movements within the increasingly dangerous environment.

These latest incidents have brought the total number of lives lost to 35 since the resurgence of hostilities in late October 2024. Despite a dawn-to-dusk curfew implemented by authorities to quell the violence, the situation remains unpredictable.

The conflict, which initially erupted in November 2021 over a disputed chieftaincy installation, had seen a temporary lull by 2023. However, tensions flared again on October 25, 2024, following the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief appointed by the Nayir. This event is believed to have reignited hostilities.

Security forces in the region remain on high alert as efforts to restore peace continue, but the town's stability remains fragile.
