The Western Central Regional Police Command has intensified its fight against illegal mining, disabling more than 120 changfang machines and arresting 13 individuals during a targeted raid in Wassa Gyapa, Western Region.
The operation, carried out on May 19, 2025, forms part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal small-scale mining—commonly referred to as galamsey—which continues to pose serious environmental threats in the region.
A police statement confirmed the seizure of six motorbikes and the deactivation of over 120 changfang machines, notorious for their destructive role in river pollution and land degradation.
Among those apprehended are Nana Ampadu, Stephen Tetteh, Yaw Dalame, Samuel Amoah, Kwame Oppong, Francis Oduom, Owusu Asare, Atta Kwame, Apiyanga Emmanuel, Kojo Montanakito, Maxwell Owusu, Obofo Vincent, and Soogal Fataw.
The suspects are scheduled to appear before court on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, where they are expected to face charges related to illegal mining activities.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining anti-galamsey operations to preserve the country’s natural resources and uphold environmental laws.
