Pressure Group, Occupy Ghana has requested an immediate step towards the declaration of a state of emergency in all mining areas in the country.

According to the group, the unprecedented and rampant scale of unregulated and illegal mining in the country has reached a stage where it demands such a declaration per Article 31(9) of the Constitution, 1992.

“We, therefore, request that you take immediate steps towards declaraing a state of emergency in every mining area in Ghana. In accordance with article 33(1) of the Constitution, these steps would be, first, seeking and obtaining the advice of the Council of State and, second, publishing a proclamation of the declaration in the Gazette.”

In its September 28, 2022, open letter to the president, the group promised to send a Galamsey Reminder every Monday morning until the government takes drastic steps to control the illegal mining situation.

In keeping with the above, Occcupy Ghana has in what it describes as the first of its weekly Galamsey Reminders, noted further that we ‘risk losing our very essence as a nation unless immediate and radical action is taken, first to stop all unregulated and illegal mining, and then put a processs in place to regulate artisanal mining, going forward.’

The group has meanwhile pledged its suggestions and proposals on how to establish a properly regulated artisanal mining industry in Ghana.
