The National Imam of Ahlu-Sunnah Wal-Jamaah (ASWAJ), Sheikh Umar Ibrahim Imam, has called on Ghanaian Muslims to embrace responsibility in marriage and family life, cautioning against entering unions “by heart” or raising children without the means to properly care for them.
Sheikh Umar, author of Investment in Islam and Spending in Allah’s Way, advised on Friday when he led the dedication of a newly constructed GH¢3 million mosque and resource centre at Abeka, Accra. The facility, located behind the Abeka Market, was funded by the Kuwaiti humanitarian group DirectAid.
Cutting the ribbon alongside DirectAid Country Director Mr Sami Henedak Ahmed, the cleric urged Muslims to treat marriage and parenting as sacred responsibilities, warning that unchecked childbirth was fueling crime and insecurity across West Africa.
DirectAid director Mr Ali Abdul Salam Ali noted the one-storey mosque took nearly two years to complete and will serve both as a house of prayer and as a resource hub for the Abeka Zongo community.
