'Concise Law of Banking' book launched
Titled Concise Law of Banking, the book is authored by Reverend Mrs. Nana Kegya Appiah-Adu, a seasoned lawyer and minister of the gospel.
A new book offering an in-depth exploration of banking law in Ghana has been launched in Accra.
Titled Concise Law of Banking, the book is authored by Reverend Mrs. Nana Kegya Appiah-Adu, a seasoned lawyer and minister of the gospel. It was commissioned by the Institute for Law and Development.
The publication covers a wide range of topics, including an introduction to banking law, bank regulation, banker-customer relationships, recovery of mistakenly paid funds, electronic banking, bank payment cards, offshore banking, credit reporting, and money laundering.
During the launch, Professor Edmund Kwaw, Head of the Faculty of Law at Wisconsin International University College, reviewed the book, describing it as a “tour de force” and strongly recommending it to readers.
Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, lauded the author for her exceptional contribution to Ghana’s legal and economic literature.
He described the book as a landmark accomplishment in the author’s career, which began at the Bank of Ghana. Dr. Addison also recommended the book to policymakers seeking insights into banking law and supervisory frameworks in Ghana.
Mrs. Efua Ghartey, the President-Elect of the Ghana Bar Association and guest of honor at the event, noted that the book is the first comprehensive work on Ghanaian banking law authored by an experienced female lawyer. She praised the book as a practical and user-friendly guide, commending its authoritative, concise, well-researched, and instructive content.
Rev. Mrs. Appiah-Adu, who also serves as Vice President of the Women’s Forum of the Ghana Bar Association, shared the inspiration behind her work. She recounted her years at the Bank of Ghana, where she taught banking law at the Bank of Ghana Training School. Later, in 2003, she joined the Ghana School of Law, initially teaching Contract Law before designing a banking law course as part of the commercial law elective program for professional law students.
She explained that the lack of suitable textbooks on Ghanaian banking law posed a significant challenge during her teaching. To address this gap, she conducted extensive research and incorporated relevant cases and materials into her notes, which eventually formed the foundation of Concise Law of Banking.
Rev. Mrs. Appiah-Adu began teaching banking law in 2004, receiving frequent requests from students and colleagues for copies of her notes. This demand prompted her to refine and compile her materials into the newly launched book.
She emphasized that Concise Law of Banking is tailored for a diverse audience, including bank customers, banking professionals, judges, lawyers, students, lecturers, and researchers working in the field of financial and banking law.
Again, the book is comprehensive and covers topics that are fundamental to banking law. The topics covered in this book include:
Introduction to Banking Law; Bank Regulation, Supervision and Licensing; The Banker-customer Relationship; Bank Accounts; Cheques; Recovery of Money Paid Mistakenly; Paying Bank & Collecting Bank; Electronic Payment Systems; Payment Cards; Offshore Banking; Credit Reporting; Borrowing and Lending in Banking; Documentary Credits and Money Laundering.
